Write Your First Piano Melody in 10min or Less

If you know nothing, or almost nothing, about how music works, could you actually write a melody on piano in 10minutes or less?

Yerp! and in this video, I'll show you how. Since I learned piano through a mix of teacher-guided lessons and teaching myself, I was shocked when I subbed for a piano teacher and saw that each student that walked in, had a "bored-out-of-my-mind" look, sat down and started "playing" in a way that looked a whole lot like how I look when I have to wash dishes.  Drudgery.

That shocked me because that was NOT my experience with piano. My own experience...was this exciting, curious journey playing random notes and noticing every now and then that some notes sounded good together.

That evolved into figuring out which key on piano goes with what note in sheet music, then guessing if I what I heard could be picked out on the piano... and discovering a whole world where I could express feelings I couldn't put into words!

As I studied pedagogy for singing and piano, I quickly realized that many of those students of that other teacher were playing only to find the right notes, please the teacher and get out of there.

They had never discovered what it was like to freely experiment and express themselves through music, through the piano even if its the first lesson.

So that's what this video is intended to do and how piano and voice lessons work in my studio.

You'll have some structure so that you're not totally lost (like I most certainly was when I started piano) but also immediate creative application of what you learn, so that learning opens you up to possibility rather than playing just to "do it right". In other words, to have fun, rather than have more work

Video Summary:

1min: My piano teacher fell asleep during my lessons...

1:41: I hear students saying how surprisingly easy piano and reading music has been for them.

1:50: Piano classes often complicate teaching and creating music

2:16: Start playing, before you know what you're doing, and enjoy it!

2:53: Let's make our melody!

Here's what SynergisticSinging is All About...

The SynergisticSinging Manifesto

Synergistic Singing is different because we take back singing for it’s real, orginal purposes: to get out of your head and connect with your body, your heart, your senses and with others. Synergistic Singing is about  celebrating your freedom of movement, daring to vulnerably express yourself and feeling the comfort of deeper connections with others through singing. Oh, and of course singing for it's own sake...but you knew that one already 😉

I'm already seeing improvement in voice and piano after two months.

Chris is an awesome teacher! He is super kind and super funny. I have no previous experience, and with only two months of lessons I already see significant improvement in my voice/piano skills! Definitely recommend doing both piano and vocal lessons simultaneously. Come to Chris, I promise you won’t regret it!
